Did A God-Sized Miracle Just Happen This Week in Congress?....

This week something epic happened in Congress. Most people see the House of Representatives as more of the House of Reprobates, swindlers, cheats, liars, and fakes who don't represent anyone but themselves. Unfortunately, most would be hard-pressed to prove otherwise. So in light of the well-established corruption in Congress on both sides of the aisle what happened this week really gave me pause.

The event that set up this week's mind-blowing phenomenon was the former Speaker of the House, Republican Speaker McCarthy was told to "vacate the chair." The Republican members essentially fired him recently for not holding up on his end of the many promises to the majority. This was such a rare event but the unprecedented action left a vacuum of power that led to days and days of political hand-to-hand combat.

To the careful observer, it was clear the "deep state" as they are known fully intended to make sure nobody who represented the people's interest got the nod to become the new Speaker. Instead, the powerful brokers of political corruption wanted a new puppet that came with a lot of IOUs so they could control the flow of trillions of dollars to enrich themselves and their special interests at the people's expense.

After days and days of voting to elect several different men who had tremendous clout, power, and connections but were really in the same vain as McCarthy one nominee after the other failed to secure the speakership. Suprisingly all the "deep states" efforts failed to get the majority vote required to elect a new speaker from among them and then this week something quite possibly providential happened.

A man, named Mike Johnson, a Congressman from Louisiana was recommended for Speaker. He was a veritable unknown to those who follow politics and some even called him a "backbencher." He agreed to pursue the election for Speaker and after several rounds of preliminary vetting votes, this unknown underdog won! It was like watching George Bailey defeat a stacked roster of Mr. Potters. Not only did he win and become the new Speaker of the House but he won by unanimous vote from his peers.

Sure it's not providential to see an underdog win but what Mike said in his first address to the House pulled back the curtain of confusion for me. I was like who is Mike Johnson and how did he win? Then I heard Speaker Johnson say:

"I believe that scripture, the Bible is very clear that God is the one who raises up those in authority. He raised up each of you, all of us. And I believe that God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment and this time."

It turns out Mike Johnson is an evangelical Christian who has a tremendous reputation for being a man of great character, intelligence, humility, and diligence in governing. Apparently, he doesn't just talk the talk but he walks the walk. This was so encouraging for me to hear. With the future of the country literally in the balance to see that not even a Congress overflowing with corruption and deception is enough to stop God's plan to restore and heal our land.

"It is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another." Psalms 75:7

I get it, it's hard to be optimistic with politicians, even people like Speaker Johnson because we have been let down many times. The old saying "absolute power, corrupts absolutely" has proven true far too often. However, so many of us have prayed and claimed God's promise to Israel for America...

"if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14

Mike Johnson's election sure seems at least for now an answer to this prayer and God's promise to heal the land. There is another great lesson in this for all of us. God has a plan and a purpose for each of us and when opportunity arises even when it looks seemingly impossible, just like Mike Johnson be bold, seize it, go for it, and leave the results in the hands of the God for whom nothing is impossible.

This week I believe God put the right man in the right place at the right time. Our country is in grave danger from within and without and it's like God said "I'm not done with America, I'm doing a new work in your land." It's like He pushed back the overwhelming darkness and against all odds put one of His followers at the helm of one of the most powerful positions in all the world.

May God bless Speaker Johnson and may God give this "backbencher" unknown son of a Fireman the wisdom, courage, and strength to put out the fires in Washington and play a big part in saving this great country.
